Let’s look at this logically. I’m with the idea that their parents were benders. They were also prolly pretty boss at it, judging from the boys. Now, with two excellent and varied benders against one measly firebender (a desperate one at that to be mugging a family), would their parents really have lost and died?
I'm thinking their parents got involved with a gang (the boys did it, why not them), only a more dangerous one than The Triple Threats. They met while they were both members, fell in love, wanted to leave to raise a family, but were forbidden from exiting. They escaped instead, went into hiding, and lived a happy life until one night several years later when they were hunted down and ambushed.
Dunno about you but it just doesn’t sit well with me that in a world where 14-yo amateurs can beat seasoned masters, two capable benders just get murdered.
You're really off the mark, Bolin and Mako's parents were obviously very weak benders. They were killed by one single, run-of-the-mill fire bender. There was just one mugger, that's it. And they couldn't even handle that. Mako and Bolin's skill level is irrelevant since weak fighters can give birth to skilled ones -- happens all the time in fiction, not every character needs a pedigree.
Anyway, a nice piece here. Takes artistic liberties, but well done.
There is no theories, you genius. Mako explained what happened -- his parents were murdered by a mugger -- "mugger" is singular, not plural. There isn't nothing else to say.
I don't know who stuck a rod up your bum but fans are allowed to theorize and speculate. True that Mako saw that his parents were attacked by a singular (omg singular not plural!) firebender, but he was 8, he could have misconstrued details and pieced things together because he was 8. If you're allowed to think his parents were weak benders, I'm allowed to think they're strong; if they were benders they'd have had at least some sense to practice, and they were two people against one firebender. You can have your own beliefs about what happened but don't go lunging at my throat if I choose to play around with my imagination. And that's that.
My favorite part is where you call the artist "dense" despite her providing more proof to back up her theory, while you're the one being all GARH U STOOPID BECAUSE U DON'T THINK THE SAME WAY I DOOO. You said it yourself, that she took artistic liberties (which she, and every other fan/ fan artist, often do) and that she did a good job. If she ends up being wrong in the end, then she's wrong, but you're not making things better by being a jerk.

Lay off the fanfiction.
Lay off the asshole pills.
